This is the official start of my Substack series where I am documenting the ups and downs of being a founder of a sustainable women’s clothing company called Good Rapport. Today marked another great year of personal and professional growth. As I've done many times around my birthday, I made time for reflection.
As I reflect on my career, I recall advice from a mentor when I was finishing my tenure as an Investment Banking analyst: always share my story. After all, I owe the genesis of my career to exactly such stories, recounted by professors, alumni, and peers, that opened my eyes to the possibilities on Wall Street. I knew then, and now, that I owe my story to future generations of women to, hopefully, empower them to write their own.
Now that my career progressed into venture investing, I once again found myself drawing on the power of stories. This time, it was those who had risked immeasurable amounts to found a company and bring their vision to the world. I hope to do the same.
Black business owners are among one of the underrepresented groups in the economy – only 2% of businesses in the United States are black-owned. As a black woman, I am motivated to tell my story, so that other young black dreamers may follow in my footsteps.
I am excited to share this story with you – from the inspiration to daily operations and everything in between. So join me, let's learn and grow together. We can make fashion not just about clothes, but stories, dreams, and positive impact — but most importantly about us, about community.
